Windows OS comes with a built-in Zip file creation feature. The previous version of Windows, Windows XP, even enabled one to encrypt these files through password protection. Mac OS X
Just like in Windows, it is possible to create a Zip file in Mac. However, you would not be able to encrypt the Zip file using the graphical user interface evident in Windows. For this default Zip creation feature, you do not need a third party software to be able to encrypt this zip file on Mac OS X. The only limitation is that the default zip file uses the weaker encryption system like in Windows XP. This password protection feature does not offer maximum protection for your files.

Automatically, they will be compressed in 7z file, encrypted with the provided password. For future reference of these files, you will need this password, so it is important choosing an easily memorable one.
The default Archive Manager, often termed as File Roller, gives the provision of creating a password protected zip file. This is also observable with the other GNONE based desktop software. Just like in Mac OS X, this zip default creation uses the older and less secure file encryption system. Nevertheless, you can still use File Roller to create stronger and more secure encrypted 7z archives.
To make this possible, you will need to install the p7zip full package. Depending on the Linux distribution you are using, you can also look for p7zip. Taking Ubuntu Software Centre, for instance, you can easily do a search for the full p7zip package, then simply install it to your computer. Alternatively, you can open up the Terminal, and use the installation command termed; sudo apt-get install p7zip full command.
With this in place, creating an encrypted 7z file becomes an easy process. Go to the Archive Manager Window and select the files you would like to be archived from the file manager window. Right click them and go to Compress. The other alternative is to directly open the File Roller application and create a new archive from it. Remember to select the 7z archive format when the Compress window opens up. Consequently, select the header titled Other Options to create your password, which will be used to access the files later.
There are other multiple software programs, which can be used to create password protected Zip files. Whichever option you go for, ensure that secure password encryption is guaranteed.
